Tutu.com held a costume design competition called Project Tutu, a fashion show, and silent auction at the 2018 USA International Ballet Competition! The contest is inspired by the hit show Project Runway. Designers come from all over the United States and Canada to participate.
First, the competition gave 11 costume designers two and a half days to create one of a kind Tutus with only three materials! All of the materials were provided by the ballet costume shop and online retailer Tutu.com. The designers, worked late into the night trying to create something that normally takes weeks to create- not only were they making tutus but also a matching headpiece! The winner of the competition was Samantha Austin, she was awarded $1,000. (Fun fact- Samantha Austin is a former dancer with Ballet Tucson!)
After the competition, the tutus were worn by USA IBC participants and Dance School Students and modeled in a fashion show. Finally they were auctioned off and all proceeds went to create funds for the Tutu.com Scholarship Fund which was awarded to USA IBC competitor and Washington Ballet dancer, Alexa Torres (Dominican Republic) during the awards gala ceremony.
